Durham Station

New Transportation Center

Apple Designs developed wayfinding signage for the Durham Station Transportation Center. Conveniently located in the city-center, the transportation hub provides multiple alternatives to vehicular traffic and ensures more efficient travel throughout the Triangle. We designed exterior signage for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic as well as the interior signage for the 10,300 SF, two-story facility. As an identifier for the new facility, we created individual back-lit letters of the station name using a special font that embodies the historic connection of the project site near Durham’s old tobacco warehouses. The station is set up as a transfer and destination hub providing ticketing, waiting areas, and vending functions. The site has twenty canopied bus bays, six parking spaces for taxis and share ride services, short-term parking, “kiss and ride” drop-off, and bicycle racks all organized around a transparent, day-lit passenger terminal. The facility offers a secure environment, visibility to the transportation activity on-site, and views of downtown, Historic American Tobacco, West Village, and surrounding areas.
