HNL Mauka Concourse

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) Airport - New Mauka Concourse

Part of the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation – Airports Division’s $3 billion Airport Modernization Program, Apple Designs served as lead wayfinding signage designer as a subconsultant on multiple teams to develop new signage and graphics replacing legacy signs campus-wide at Honolulu’s airport. In an effort to promote the Aloha culture and embrace the natural environment, Apple Designs incorporated Hawaiian language, graphics, imagery, colors, materials, and finishes into the sign system that complement the Hawaiian sense of place initiative and enhance the passenger experience.

Mauka Concourse was one of the original long-term projects identified in Daniel K. Inouye International Airport’s modernization program and the first major expansion at HNL since Terminal 1 was built in 1993. The 230,000 SF concourse accommodates wide- and narrow-body gates, added security checkpoints and incorporated eco-friendly design elements achieving LEED gold level certification. The expanded capacity improves efficiency and safety while offering a spacious, light-filled environment. With the opening of Mauka Concourse, travelers received an improved Honolulu airport experience. This new world-class facility creates a welcoming gateway for visitors enriching the overall travel experience.
