University of Virginia (UVA): Main Library Renovation
Date: July 2020
Apple Designs served as a member of the architect team leading the effort to rehabilitate UVA’s main library for the Alderman Library Renewal Project beginning the next chapter of the library’s service to scholarly innovation and excellence. In an effort to revitalize the Library, the project focused on upgrading and enhancing the character and historical features of the facility while bringing the building up to standards for safety, accessibility, usability, and services. A new fully integrated 75,000 SF addition replaces the old and new Stacks and was carefully curated to meet student and faculty needs including new collaborative rooms and meeting spaces. Apple Designs prepared multiple conceptual design themes for the brand new signage program representative of the University brand and image while considering the important relationship between UVA’s campus libraries and Special Collections. The vision of the renovation was realized in a multi-phase plan where we continued to develop the signage package and ensure design integrity of the selected sign family concept throughout the production and installation of the sign system throughout future phases.
